If you're faced with a forced landing, fly the thing as far into the crash as possible.

The cold & snowy February meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to order at 7:10:35 with thirty-one people in attendance. Two of those people were visitors interested in joining the club. Both were voted in along with another who couldn’t attend the meeting. Please welcome Steve Shoop of Nashville, John Sparks of Bloomington, & Dennis Anderson of Plainfield. You may remember that John Sparks visited with us a few months back. He finally decided to join, despite the fact that his brother Tim has belonged to the club for many years.
Plans for our swap meet on 2/27 are finalized & Bob Watson was present selling tables to members. Breakfast on the 27th is at Cracker Barrel (6:00 A.M.) & table setting will start at 7:00 or so. Vendors can get in to set up their displays at 8:00 and the doors will open to shoppers at 9:00. All times are Eastern Standard. The swap meet flyer is on the club web page. The web address is http://www.monroecountyrc.org.
Dennis Friesel thanked us for our holiday donation to “Jill’s House”.
Matt Fornefeld will chair the 2005 Air Show. Sunday, August 7, was the date chosen. Volunteers will be needed for many jobs concerning the air show. Contact Matt to see how you can help via e-mail at eyes@insightbb.com.
The date selected for this year’s club picnic is Sunday, September 11.
The cut off date for this year’s bulk fuel order is February 23. A special e-mail will be sent out to notify members. Club president Mark Sexton is taking the orders. Mr. David Poland has agreed to be the middle man again this year. I won’t mention Mr. Winship’s name or his web site http://www.winshiprc.tripod.com/, to keep him out of trouble. He might be our Sig dealer, but you didn’t hear it here. Thanks Dan! It was suggested that the club purchase some extra fuel to make available to newcomers that missed the order. Mark will study the storage options available & make the call on that issue.
Robert G. Shireman will host another Dawn Patrol Fly-In this year on August 28. Get your WWI aircraft ready.
Mr. Shireman purchased a new first aid kit for the shelter at the club field & mentioned that we need some frequency pin clips.
Attention: Somebody used the outhouse lock on the frequency cabinet. There’s no need to lock the frequency cabinet. The neighborhood vandals have repeatedly broken into the cabinet & usually tear something up in the process. That’s why we leave it unlocked.
Rich Davis is looking for anyone else interested in attending the IMAC judging seminar in April. Contact Rich via e-mail at richdavis@richdavis.net.
There will now be time set aside at the end of future club meetings for show & tell. This month’s projects included Matt Fornefeld’s BF or ME 109 show plane. Matt plans to enter some scale competitions when finished with the Dave Platt kit. Tim Mellott is building a 1/5 scale, clipped wing Cub & brought in part of what he has framed up. Jimmy Vanvleet brought in his custom made engine mount linerupper jig thingie. It is designed to find the engine mount center point on a firewall from a cowl opening using a 1.5 degree right thrust angle. Jimmy says he will loan out his device to anyone who can figure out how to use it. Contact Jimmy via e-mail at jvtopgun40@aol.com.
Tuesday evenings will be trainer nights again this season, starting on May 2. Beginner pilots seeking instruction or old dogs trying to learn new tricks are encouraged to come out to the field on Tuesday evenings & meet with instructors & intro pilots.
Steve Shoop announced his Butterfly Hills R/C Challenge at his place April 29—May 1. Stay tuned for details.
Dennis Friesel was presented with a nice plaque by Tim Sparks for his pylon racing efforts. Congratulations Dennis!
The meeting was closed at 8:01.
Tim Mellott has a thing going with Sig Four Star 60s. He likes them but they don’t like him. I believe this is number four that he’s working on now. He thought that since Bill Black already holds the Kadet Senior record, he would go for the 4 Star record.
There’s been a rash of landing gear failures lately. It must be the little bitty wheels, the rough frozen ground or the evil cross winds, or the high speed touch & gos, or the wheel pants dragging in the mud, or the deadstick landings out in the bean field. It surely couldn’t have been any fault of the pilots!
Young Damon Ferguson has a new U-Can-Do. With a little practice, & if the aircraft survives, there’s no doubt that he will be able to do some 3D.
Jimmy Vanvleet has been programming all Winter on his new Ultra Stick using his new 9C “PCM” radio. He’s just now beginning to realize that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet. He is now looking forward to programming a Sopwith Pup that doesn’t have a “crow” setting.
Warning: Model aircraft wings can ice up in bad weather, just like full scale aircraft wings, but who in their right mind would fly model airplanes in weather like that!
You loose a little of the “feel” of the sticks when you fly with gloves but not nearly as much feel as you loose from frostbite.
Everett “Bud” Sexton celebrated his 83rd birthday recently with a trip to the hobby shop & lunch at Hooters.

For the beginner (AMA Class 424) there are some ARF kits that are available through Great Planes, the Lanier (Predator) and Great Planes (Viper) are two of the most recent popular ARF's. These ARF's can be purchased for a little over 100.00, most people already have a .40 size motor they can use, others prefer the Thunder Tiger Pro .40 A 4 channel radio w/standard servos and your set to go. You can see the Quickee Style ARF racers at http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LANA1302 http://www.greatplanes.com/airplanes/gpma1265.html With almost 3 months until the contest, it's not to late to be getting ready for racing at Muncie 5/21-5/22.
